Hunger! With grumbling, empty stomachs, a hunting party of Neanderthals roamed the valley. Although they had already slayed an impressive specimen of a giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus), they knew the danger of eating raw meat. Ohmgroog, the elder, had just passed away because he didn’t belief in that danger. And it was a painful passing… A big gust of wind from the last thunderstorm had silenced their fireplace. Now, the hunt was on for something as vital as food: fire!

With their feet wrapped in fur boots, they crossed a shallow river, shuffled through the adjoining blankets of marsh grass and lifted their noses into the wind, hoping to detect traces of smoke. Smoke, the sacred messenger of the god fire!

Suddenly, with a guttural rumble out of the mighty clouds high above their fleecy heads, a thousandfold jagged lightning bolt twitched frantically towards the earth. The sudden brightness went through the hunters’ bones like a roaring shockwave and they threw themselves to the ground.

In just a blink of the eye, the world was dark again. And then, the silence of the darkness was shattered by a ear-splitting thunderclap. The hunters pressed their heads as low into the grass as they could to escape the dreaded wrath of heavenly death. And they lay quiet for a…
